Don’t Be Gloomy About Moving in Bad Weather

It’s moving day. everything is packed, the Commander Moving truck is parked outside, and despite your prayers for sunshine the weather forecast is coming true—a storm is brewing, prompting worries of soaked boxes and ruined furniture.

But moving in bad weather doesn’t have to be a nightmare. If you have to move when it’s raining, snowing or windy, we follow these tips to protect your belongings (and your sanity).

Commander Moving Protects Your Belongings

While the sight of rain or snow clouds might make you worry about the future of your boxes, cardboard is actually more durable than it looks. As long as your boxes are sealed with packing tape, everything inside should survive the move. But loose items—like the clothes you planned to leave on the hangers, or your furniture and artwork—won’t survive the elements as well.

Commander Moving sells mattress pads to keep your mattresses clean and dry. We use industrial plastic covers and other items to help you move in rain, hail or snow. For example:

  • Commander Moving will wrap artwork in plastic wrap to prevent rain or snow from getting into gaps in the frame.
  • Commander Moving will put your groups of clothes in wardrobe boxes (at no additional cost!) to keep the rain off.
  • Comander Moving will use heavy blankets to protect all of your furniture (especially wood furniture).

Prep Your Moving Space

Commander Moving will line the entryway of your house and the front porch with protection. As we carry boxes and furniture out, we’ll catch any mud or water from our feet before it causes any damage inside.

Finally, Commander Moving makes sure everyone helping in the move is wearing boots or all-weather sneakers. Slippery ground can make it dangerous when carrying cumbersome boxes and furniture.

Prep Your New Home

Commander Moving will make sure that your new home is as protected, as we did for the home you are moving out of.

Set-Up an Assembly Line

If the weather is really bad, Commander Moving will set up an assembly line at your old house to make things move faster and protect your floors. We will designate one or two people to stand inside and hand boxes to another person or two outside who can bring them to the truck. This way, the floors will stay dry and you will cut down on time a bit, getting you out of the bad weather faster. Likewise at your new place, Commander Moving will have indoor and outdoor crews who can hand off your belongings to keep the muck and moisture outside.

Remember, Commander Moving is dedicated to taking the stress out of your move. It can be stressful enough moving, don't allow the wet weather to make you more stressed!
